MavenChic Trendspotting: Latest trends in Nail Art

Originated from South Korea, the technique was developed by Seoul manicurist Eunkyung Park, and has since been trending on Instagram.

If the thought of actual glass shards on your nails sounds terrifying, hold your horses; that are not what’s happening here. Instead, women are sticking cut pieces of Mylar paper onto their nails in a way that resembles shiny, sharp glass pieces.

Everyone loves beautiful nail art, but it makes it that much sweeter when you can achieve the look with a DIY Kit.

All the leaves are brown, but your nails can be absolutely beautiful for autumn.

We have got the inside scoop for you to do this latest manicure on your own.

Here’s what you do:

  • Use your go-to base coat your nails
  • Paint a coat or two of your favorite dark polish. Anything from navy and black to purple and deep red to burgundy can do the trick
  • Use top coat and let dry for 10 to 15 minutes or until tacky
  • With iridescent cellophane that you can find at your local crafts store, randomly cut little triangles so it resembles shards of glass.
  • Grab a tweezers and carefully place the pieces onto the nail in a design of your choice. The more pieces you put on the nail, the more ‘shattered’ it will look
  • Apply a final layer of top coat. For best results, use a top coat that’s specifically designed for nail art.

Helpful Tips

  • If you don’t have cellophane, no problem! You can easily get the same look using gold transfer foil or even a thin sheet of aluminum foil
  • To avoid sharp edges and bumps make sure to gently press the paper onto the nail

5 Tips to keep in mind when applying nail art

  • Nails should be neatly manicured before painting. If your natural nails are too short or bitten down, consider applying acrylic nails before painting your design.
  • You would need to work as fast as possible, since nail polish dries rather quickly. Feel free to mix glitter into the polish colors before painting your nails. Try using stick-on stones to jazz up a simple motif.
  • To make your designs last longer (since you’ve put in so much effort into it), apply a coat of clear nail polish every two or three days. Don’t use your nails as kitchen tools and wear gloves when doing tasks that may cause damage to your nails.
  • It’s best to use a Q-tip and nail polish remover to clean any polish application mistakes.
  • Remember, nail art is like makeup – there are NO RULES! You need to try out things you like and customize it to your choice.
